Evelyn

I am an educator with years of experience guiding students in ELA and in their SAT/ACT test preparation efforts. I have a bachelor's degree in urban studies from Barnard College of Columbia University and I tutor grades 6-College.

My tutoring style:

I'm a tutor who practices what she preaches: I stay informed about new developments with the SAT and ACT exams, and I read and write in my personal life because this is what I teach.

I'd describe myself as a compassionate, empathetic, perceptive tutor. I practice compassion by asking my students about their personal interests outside of school. By doing this, I build trust in the student-tutor relationship and acknowledge the student as a whole person. I practice empathy by using my own former schooling experiences to shape my interactions with students. I practice being perceptive by paying attention to my students' personal well-being, which they communicate through their eye contact, vocal tone, and gestures. From these cues, I'm know when my students are well and when they are overwhelmed.

During the rare "off-day" when my students are stressed, I make sure to address it, provide reassurance, and alter my tutoring style for that day to ensure that my student still absorbs our academic material at a steady pace.

Success story:

My most recent success story is helping a student raise her ACT composite score by 6 points (13 percentage points) after ten hours of tutoring. That's the equivalent of helping a student raise their test score from a B- to an A after ten hours together. Last year, I helped a seventh grader in her SHSAT preparation. (The SHSAT is a test for 8th graders for high school admission in New York). She went from facing challenges with SHSAT questions to receiving perfect scores on PSAT questions (10th grade level questions).
