About Me

I have taught all levels of math and the sciences, along with several electives, to grades 6-12 for 24 years. I received a bachelor's degree in math and a master's degree in education from UCSB, then later a bachelor's degree in chemistry from CLU. I have been tutoring even longer than that, mostly in Algebra 1 and Geometry. I can use any curriculum that a student uses and/or create my own for any class and have all the necessary technology for doing so online, as well as in person.

Tutoring Style

First, I'll get to know the student, their background, experience, etc. I like to ask them what they like about math and what they dislike about math, for that gives me a good idea of where any knowledge gaps may be. If they have their own curriculum to use, I'll ask if they can explain what they know about the lesson they need to do. If they have no idea, I'll improvise nearly a full lesson for them before beginning the assignment. If they already have a pretty good idea of the concepts, I'll have them do the assignment, telling me what they're doing at each step, so I can guide them. I try to show concepts from as many different perspectives as possible to help students relate to the meaning behind them. I can slow down or accelerate easily, based on student needs. Whenever possible, I'll connect new concepts with previous ones to reiterate the foundational nature of math. Lastly, I try to use humor in my teaching as much as I can, to keep sessions enjoyable and engaging.

Success Story

I once tutored a brother and sister pair who were entirely homeschooled and needed to pass math and science classes up through Geometry and Chemistry, in order to pass their GED. Working with them together 1-2 times a week over two years (entirely online because it was during COVID), I got them through Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Oceanography, and Money Math, both with above 3.0 GPA. Last I heard, they both graduated and are pursuing careers.

Hobbies & Interests

I read as many books as I can, while also writing some of my own (currently in the midst of my sixth book). I also like to ride my bike, play board/card games with my family, go to movies/shows/ballets, and travel whenever I get the chance (the next three potential trips are Ireland, Hawaii, and Australia).
