About Me

I am a certified teacher with more than 30 years of experience teaching and tutoring math, reading, language arts, English as a second language, and testing strategies to students from all walks of life in various grade levels. I earned a bachelor's degree from SUNY Brockport and a master's degree from SUNY Brockport and UTGRV. I tutor students in grades 4-9.

Tutoring Style

Everyone learns differently and one of my top skills is detecting how each of my students learns. My other top skill is that I make learners feel comfortable, resulting in their ability to be honest with me about their learning: what's going well and what's not, and admitting their weaknesses (personal or academic) so that we can work on them. When I tutor, I use color, pictures, and real-life examples that the student can relate to. When needed, I back up to teach a missing skill so the student can be successful at the skill we're working on. At other times, I step forward by adding a twist to challenge the student. What's most important is that the student experiences success and feels successful by the end of each session.

Success Story

One of my success stories is when I tutored a high school student who had to pass the Texas exam for US History to graduate. Unfortunately, she had only been in the United States a few years so had missed becoming familiar with and learning many of the basics of US history. During our sessions, we used various learning learning strategies and practiced test-taking skills. After only a few months of working together, she took the exam and passed on her first attempt!
