I am a mathematics student and tutor with over 4 years of experience tutoring math and math-adjacent subjects to middle school, high school, and college students. I have a master's in mathematics from Arizona State University, and I tutor grades 6-Graduate.
My goal with teaching is always to help cultivate students' creativity and critical thinking, something that is essential to mathematics. I believe the goal of teaching mathematics is generally to teach students how to apply knowledge to solve problems, and I try to reflect this in my teaching style. For example, when a student comes to me with a math problem, my first approach is to set them up with the knowledge they need to solve the problem and allow them the space to explore their ideas while sometimes giving a push in the right direction. I strongly believe that this method gives students a deeper understanding of mathematics that will result in higher long-term success.
One student I had was severely struggling in their high school algebra class when I first took them as a student, and he had not submitted almost half of his homework assignments up to that point. After our first few sessions, I realized that he was quite a bright student, but he just struggled to find the motivation to study and do his homework. I decided in one of our sessions to simply talk about his goals and dreams, particularly what he wanted out of school and as a career, and we discussed what he needed to do to achieve his ambitions. Shortly after that, he stopped missing homework assignments and would study even beyond what was necessary for his class. He recently graduated high school and is now attending university with a full-ride scholarship with plans to pursue a degree in STEM.
In my spare time, I like to play piano, read novels, practice archery, and play video games. I'm currently reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I also love chili pepper plants, and I even have a Carolina Reaper plant, one of the spiciest peppers in the world!
