I am a certified teacher with experience teaching and tutoring students in grades 6-12. I earned a Bachelor's degree from Simpson College in 2011. My top goal as an educator has always been to help my students overcome the feelings of frustration and discouragement that sometimes come with learning math.
I meet students where they are both as a person and in their studies. I take special care getting to know my students and using what they know to get them where they need to be. I connect mathematical content with intriguing questions or problems that get them interested and thinking. From there, we connect the current mathematical concepts to create deep learning for the student.
I began working with a student who was not confident in her math skills and was quite shy. She often would not begin or attempt problems because she didn't know where to start and became easily frustrated. After a few months of working with her and getting to know her, she began to transform into a different student! During our sessions, we would talk more and more about her day and her interests, which provided easier and smother transitions into discussing mathematics. Three months later, I asked her to solve an open-ended problem, and I was so impressed with how she went about it! She explained her work and she had confidence in trying several strategies. At the end of our work together, she had raised her grade by two letters.
I love being outdoors! I like to run, hike, snowboard, rock climb and recently started learning to skateboard. I also enjoy reading books and painting.
