I am an internationally awarded science communicator with a decade of experience in 1-1 tutoring, classrooms, and lecture halls teaching math, SAT/ACT prep, and IB/AP math, physics, chemistry, and biology. I have a bachelor's degree from Coe College and I tutor grades 9-College.
I am passionate and innovative about the topics I learn. My sessions are full of anecdotes, metaphors, and custom-made animations – all of which I adapt to the strengths of my student. Sometimes you forget you're learning math and, all out the sudden, BOOM! Congratulations, you now find AP Calculus easy and got a 5 on the exam with 20 minutes extra time to take a nap if you so wish.I measure your progress in different skills throughout our time together and quantify that data so that I know precisely what skills we need to target at any given time. This has taken my testing students from the 10th percentile to the 99th percentile.
JM was a student with an undefined dream; he wasn't sure what he wanted to do, but it was definitely not what he was doing during high school. He had to help his family financially and worked 3 jobs – morning shifts and nights shifts. He was barely even in school; he was tardy to classes and had to leave them early – and hated every moment of it. His mother pushed him to pursue a college education to get a better job so they wouldn't suffer so much – and he would do anything for his family. He seeked me for SAT help to get into a college. He wasn't doing well in school; he had failed all classes freshman year – and he hated math. I talked to his mother and we developed a plan to get him on track to get a high school diploma at minimum. We met over summer and – that fall – he got his first A's and B's in classes and we improved his SAT score by 600 points. We kept going with the plan throughout the years – and now JM is a PhD candidate in pure mathematics at Princeton.
Emily, an aspiring student with initial struggles in the SAT math section, was determined to achieve her dreams of attending a prestigious university. Through focused tutoring, we addressed her math weaknesses, instilled time management skills, and emphasized practice tests. Emily's hard work led to a remarkable 150-point score increase, opening the doors to her dream schools and earning her a valuable scholarship. Her emotional reaction upon seeing her improved scores reflected the transformation she'd undergone, demonstrating that with dedication, effective tutoring, and perseverance, students can conquer challenges and reach their goals.
