I have been a teacher for eight years and taught at an international school in Ankara, Turkey. I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Michigan State University and I tutor grades 6-12.
I love tutoring because of the opportunity there is to build relationships with my students. This allows me to teach in a way that is meaningful to them as well as focusing on their goals. I enjoy using creativity in my teaching and I believe math is more than just copying how a teacher does a problem. My focus is on the student's understanding and encouraging them in their ability and thinking.
A student that comes to mind is one that was in my Algebra 1 class. She was in a higher grade than her classmates but had struggled with math a lot during her middle school and high school years. She came to my class hating math and believing she would never be able to do it. After getting to know this student, encouraging her to share her thoughts with her classmates, highlighting her thinking to the class, teaching math with activities and discovery, she left my class with the best grade she had ever received. Beyond a good grade, she also now has confidence in herself, her thinking, and she believes she can succeed in future trials. This to me was the most important because I believe all students are capable of mathematics and I want them to develop this belief in themselves.
I really enjoy traveling. I love seeing and experiencing different cultures around the world. I love sports, especially basketball, but most of the time am running or lifting weights. I also am pursuing being a potter, so I am working with clay most of the days I am not tutoring. My husband has also showed me the world of gaming and anime which now are becoming more of my own hobbies too.
