My experience tutoring grades 3-College has taught me that every student is a unique learner. I have a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in accounting from the University of Virginia, and I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Houston.
Each student deserves a personalized experience, and that is what I provide. I believe in meeting students where they are. It is important to me to engage the student during our lessons. I minimize lecturing in favor of asking questions and checking for comprehension. I find that students respond well when they truly get to participate in the learning process.
I once had a student who consistently scored in the 40th percentile on the SAT math section. When we started, he felt utterly defeated by the exam. Our work together was a steady process of convincing him that he knew the material but not the test-taking strategies that would unlock the test for him. By the time we got to our last session, he truly believed that he could ace the test. That part was the victory to me: he gained confidence in the fact that he could succeed. The fact that he went on to score in the 80th percentile was icing on the cake.
