My ambition to pursue my studies at higher levels is partly due to many great teachers who have inspired me and filled my heart with love and thirst to knowledge and science in particular. I have a PhD from the University of Nevada at Reno and I tutor grades 3-College.
The tutor should be a facilitator that lays down the way and tools to tackle problems, then monitors the students steps toward getting the final answer with the minimum intervention that should trigger the student’s critical thinking (by asking questions or by brainstorming). The tutor should be a good listener and a kind and patient teacher.
In one of the hot summer nights, I got a call from a student’s mom. She was desperate to find a miraculous Math tutor for her 6th grade boy. He was doing really bad in Math and his teacher was complaining all the time about her son’s performance and grades. She got my phone number from one of her friends for whom I worked as a Math tutor. I started with the boy and I have noticed that he does not like to be pushed to learn. I tried many ways to make learning math as fun as possible for him. This method worked perfectly and the boy was very cooperative and actively learning. After less than three weeks, the mother was amazed by how well her son is doing in Math. His grades did improve noticeably. The mother noticed my methodology and tried to follow it in other subjects. She required that methodology to be followed as a condition of hiring any tutor for her son.
