About Me

I am a tutor with more than four years of experience tutoring AP and first-year college Physics and all levels of Math up to Calculus 1. I have experience with both private and group tutoring and have even led support sessions with a classroom full of students. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley and I tutor grades 4-University, and have experience with students aged from 8 to 60 years old!

Tutoring Style

I focus my lessons on taking things step by step and building confidence in my student's math skills. If I see gaps in a student's learning, which is all too common with math students who struggle, I make sure to take a step back and review as much as I can to build a strong foundation before progressing. I have students walk me through problems or topics we recently reviewed to confirm that they understood and repeat this process until I am certain they are confident in their knowledge. In addition to these practices, I have an enthusiastic and encouraging teaching style give positive reinforcement whenever possible, and enjoy forming a personal relationship with each of my students and tailoring the lessons to their specific needs.

Success Story

A memorable success story that I have is helping a student with a learning disability overcome her insecurities relating to math and passing her Algebra 1 class. She started out quite shy and had little confidence to answer questions I posed initially to understand where her level was at, so in the beginning, there was a lot of trial and error in discovering how to best help her. Once we got to know each other better and I was able to meet her at her level and help her feel successful in the small achievements we made slowly but surely to get her caught up, her grades greatly improved and she was able to pass by the time the year was up. She also perked up in our sessions and had improved confidence, which is the most rewarding part.

Hobbies & Interests

I have a passion for travel. I speak Portuguese and Spanish in addition to English and love learning about new cultures. I also love hiking and the outdoors. On a regular weekend, I'll usually be at the beach, in the mountains, or at a live music event, hopefully a combination of the three!
