I am a certified teacher with six years of teaching experience in the general education mathematics classroom. I have taught students ranging in ability from students who have IEPs for specific learning disabilities to Gifted Students. I have a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University, and a master's degree from Northern Arizona University, and I tutor grades 9-12.
I am a teacher who is passionate about helping individuals learn problem solving skills. I utilize a style of teaching where I ask students questions to guide them through the thinking process, helping them develop lifelong skills in logic, processing, and problem solving. I take my time with each topic to ensure students develop the skills and offer students repeated practice opportunities to solidify understanding.
Students come to me with all levels of ability and I frequently need to work one-on-one with students on topics that are foundational for geometry. One of my favorite stories is about a young man who started his sophomore year of high school not understanding how fractions worked. In geometry, fractions are crucial in determining scale factors, so it was very important to help him understand how to simplify fractions to determine if there was a scale factor. I utilized manipulatives to create visual representations of fractions which allowed him to understand how to simplify and compare fractions to determine if a scale factor existed. He was able to use this skill to do well on the test associated with the topic both at that time and again at the end of the school year.
My hobbies and interests are all over the place. I am a gamer - pc, console, mobile, tabletop, card. I am a reader - science fiction, fantasy fiction, romance, young adult. I enjoy nature - hiking, camping, riding, animals of all kinds. I also enjoy swimming, coaching and playing volleyball.
