I am a former middle school teacher who has taught numerous subjects for the past 12 years.
I believe in focusing on general concepts that can be applied to many academic disciplines rather than finding the quickest easiest way to complete work. My strategy as a STEM professional is to make as many conceptual connections as I can to a given topic. I like this style of learning because I believe that if fosters life long learners that can solve problems, rather than good test takers.
Over my 12 years, I have had many success stories with students, my favorite was when I helped a group of students grasp integer addition and subtraction by switching to a number line. My co-teacher was adamant about integer chips, but many students still did not understand, even though they could use the chips to compute the correct answers. When seeing the movement of the values on a number line the concept became more clear and students were able to successfully grasp it.
I have many hobbies, I love to hike, play music, read, and ski to name a few. I love fantasy stories and sci-fi stories like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Interstellar to name a few.
