I have been tutoring for years – both online and in person. I graduated magna cum laude from the College of Coastal Georgia with a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a focus on applied mathematics. I tutor grades 4-College.
Every student is unique and learns differently. My tutoring sessions are not only a learning experience for my students – but for myself as well. I treat every single session as a time to learn something new from my students, as I want to be able to adapt my teaching style to suit my student’s needs.
It is very important to foster an environment where it is okay to make mistakes. The first step in creating this learning environment is establishing that personal tutor-student relationship. I want to be a mentor to my students and help guide them along their path to success, and I cannot do that while being a stranger to them. My goal is to have each of my students leave each session being more confident in the subject material and, most importantly, with a smile.
There is one moment in my tutoring career that reinforces why I do what I do. I had a student named Philip while I was tutoring for a High School Analytical Geometry class. Philip never thought he was good at math, since he never passed a math test throughout his school career. He was fearful for upcoming the Analytical Geometry EOCT (a test that was required to graduate at the time) at the end of the semester. Every day I worked with Philip, and each day he was mentioning how he was unsure about the exam. It was each day that I told him, “Don’t worry about it, you got this.” When it came to the day before the test, I wished Philip good luck and I did not see him again until the following semester. In that moment that Philip and I met again - he threw his arms around me and gave me the biggest hug exclaiming, “Mr. B, I passed!!!” It was through Philip’s perseverance, studying and working hard each day that I was able to help guide him to overcome this obstacle. It is moments like these that solidify why I keep tutoring to this day. I strive to share both my passion of mathematics and the idea that anyone can learn math.
