I am a community college professor with more than a decade of experience teaching online and in person. I teach reading, writing, and English as a second language to high school and college students. I have a Master's degree from Michigan State University and I tutor grades 8-College.
Everyone's experience with reading and writing is different. I work with my students to understand their challenges and develop a customized plan to improve their skills. All lessons are tailored to build on each student's strengths and interests. The first few sessions, I spend time learning about each student and what motivates them. The lessons will incorporate content they find interesting to increase their desire to continue learning. I believe that learning can and should be enjoyable so some sessions will include educational games tied to the material students are covering.
One of my favorite success stories is helping a college student dramatically improve her writing skills in a composition class. She started the semester having a difficult time trying to draft a short essay for the class. We worked together two times a week for the rest of the semester on brainstorming, developing a thesis statement, and learning how to conduct research effectively. Her grades on papers went from the D range up to a B, and she finished the semester with an A in the final essay. She received her Associate's degree and transferred to a university to complete her Bachelor's degree in business.
When I am not tutoring, I love spending time outdoors exploring my area or traveling to parts unknown. I also enjoy reading, listening to music, hiking, playing tennis, snorkeling, and photography.
