I am a certified teacher with nearly a decade of experience in high school math. I also speak Spanish and have experience translating and teaching the language to young children and adult learners. I have a master's degree in math education from the University of Texas at Arlington and I tutor grades 9-12.
I think of tutoring as individualized learning that can be fully customized to meet a student’s needs. There is a lot of freedom in that I can help the student with exactly what they need to learn, as well as being able to build up the surrounding skills of the topic we are working on as well as building up their confidence in Math and/or Spanish. Tutoring is also a personal experience, where questions can be modified to be more interesting to the student, based on their interests.
When I was a teacher, I had one student who was a senior in Algebra 2, who needed to pass the class in order to graduate. He had a processing disorder and had a lot of trouble having the math processes stick in his memory when he would work independently. He would come to after school help multiple times a week to ask for extra help and get extra resources that he could use to prep for assessments and assignments. For the semester that I worked with him, I got to know him and his learning style better and was able to help identify successful ways to help him with the different processes that we used over the semester in Algebra 2. He also grew an appreciation for the class, even though it wasn’t his favorite subject. He went on to graduate and was able to get into a good college, even though he did struggle in math.
I enjoy cooking and baking, but certainly not cleaning up afterwards! I also enjoy crocheting clothes and toys. I’m a bit of nerd, and quite enjoy Harry Potter and other high fantasy worlds.
