I have a bachelor's degree in marketing and multinational business operations and a doctorate in U.S. history from Florida State University. I have more than a decade of experience tutoring grades 6-College in mathematics, English language arts, and history. I can also tutor the entire SAT and ACT.
Tutoring is best accomplished as a conversation. The student and the tutor need to work as partners so that the time spent together is fulfilling for both people. Tutors need to listen to students so they can better understand how to help, and students need to feel confident that the tutor will see the student as an active participant in the process of learning. Students also need to feel comfortable telling a tutor what they don’t know so that they can get the proper guidance on how to feel more successful.
One student I worked with struggled on standardized tests. She was convinced that she just wasn’t good at them and that she would not have a chance to gain admission to any of the colleges she wanted to attend. She started working with me because she had been in my history class, so I knew that she had the skills to be successful, but she lacked confidence. This was especially true for math. We started working together and spent time going over all the things she knew, then we went through some practice problems in order to apply that knowledge to answering questions. In just a few weeks, she realized that it wasn’t that she didn’t know enough, or wasn’t good at tests, but that she just didn’t have the experience she needed to understand how to approach each type of question or problem. Once her confidence blossomed, she began to see the test as an opportunity to get into the schools to which she wanted to apply, and as a result, was accepted to her first choice and got a prestigious scholarship from the university.
I enjoy running, reading, and playing the drums.
