I am a certified teacher with 20+ years of experience and recently retired. During my teaching career, I taught pretty much every math course from Pre-Algebra to AP-Calculus. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and I tutor grades 7-College.
I approach tutoring in much the same way I would work with students in a one to one or small group setting when I was teaching. I believe it is important to establish some level of relationship with the student first. I also believe it is important to gain an understanding of where a student is in terms of learning and do my best to meet them at that point. I also encourage students to find their own unique way of doing things and to share it with others. I don't always believe "my way is the best way".
When I was between teaching jobs, I found a job tutoring individuals that were returning to education later in life. One particular student had a dream of owning and running his own gym. Circumstances provided him with that opportunity, but he lacked the education to allow him to acquire the necessary certifications. He had just "got by" at school and not retained much knowledge. We worked together for a few weeks and we were able to improve his basic math skills to a point where he not only passed his placement exam, but scored near the top. Sometimes it is about finding that right motivation.
I love being outdoors. I will go camping , hiking or biking whenever I can get a chance. I also enjoy history. I have extensive knowledge of WWII military aircraft and have collected and assembled many models of them. I also enjoy pretty much any sport from football and baseball to tennis and golf. I love to discuss them with anybody.
