I am a certified elementary school teacher with 17 years of experience in public school. I currently teach fifth-grade math but have experience teaching all subjects in grades K-5. I have a master's degree in educational technology and am currently working towards a doctorate at Asbury University in Principalship, Supervisor of Instruction, and Director of Pupil Personnel. I enjoy working with all elementary students and looking for ways to make learning fun and engaging. For example, if a child is interested in NBA and is struggling with math word problems, I might write word problems about NBA teams or statistics and keep points as we went along to help the student be engaged.
I am passionate about learning and believe it is my job to find a way to help my students understand the topic we are covering. As I begin working with a new student, I spend time getting to know them, their learning styles, their interests, and the areas they are struggling with. I will then tailor our lessons to the student's needs, while also ensuring that the lessons match their learning style and utilize areas or topics of interest to the student.
One of my favorite success stories is when I helped a third grader learn to read. I started working with her halfway through her third-grade year and she was so discouraged. She was failing reading and knew she was far below her peers. We broke down specific areas she was struggling with and slowly built her confidence. By the end of third grade, she had a B in reading and was raising her hand to read in class. I am so proud of her and all she accomplished, but more importantly she started to be proud of herself.
When I am not tutoring I love spending time with my family. My husband and I are both teachers, so we enjoy spending the summer traveling with our four children. I enjoy going to the beach, riding roller coasters at amusement parks, visiting baseball and basketball stadiums, and playing/watching sports with our kids.
