I believe the best way to motivate students to become passionate about math concepts is to build connections to real life applications. I have a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Florida and I tutor grades 8-College.
I strive to follow the lead of the student when approaching problems as this drives student’s confident and eventually success, only leading the problem when the student indicates that they aren't sure where to start. Primarily, I like to approach problems using the methods that he student learns in the classroom. Also, I believe positive feedback is vital when tutoring and aim to foster an “all questions are good questions” environment where the student feels conformable asking any questions without feeling inadequate or ashamed.
My favorite success story to share is that of one of my first students. She started out struggling in College Algebra and was very unmotivated to continue in the course. I tutored her for 2-3 days a week until she passed the course. I continued to tutor her in several subsequent math courses all the way up to Calculus 3. She became so confident in her math abilities that she eventually became an employee at the tutoring center that I worked at. She became my coworker!
