My goal is to help students set and achieve their mathematics goals. In addition to answering specific homework questions, I have a lot of experience designing lessons covering various mathematics topics. I have a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and I tutor grades 5-College.
My primary goal is to connect with my students and help them see that math is not scary! I teach using a growth mindset and teach my students about it, even celebrating their mistakes and helping them learn how to learn. I always put students and their questions at the center of my lessons. I supply examples for any topic of interest or use examples from their class. Additionally, I have at least two or three ways of explaining almost any concept.
I worked with a student when he was a 6th grader. We worked together weekly and developed a close working relationship. By the end of the year, I was able to predict his mistakes before he made them! We talked a lot about having a growth mindset and he learned how to use his mistakes to learn. Because of our year of tutoring, he did not need my help his 7th grade year! I am working with him again this year on Algebra after not speaking to him for almost a year. His mother contacted me and we have reconnected to the point it feels like we never stopped working together. I can see his growth am excited to help him increase his confidence yet again.
I love reading non-fiction books, especially about psychology, and fantasy and sci-fi fiction books. I’m a big Star Trek nerd as well. I blend tea and am always making new flavor combinations. I also have several cats and am an animal lover in general.
