I’ve been tutoring and teaching learners of all ages for more than a decade, with a focus on middle school and high school. I have a Bachelor's degree from Fordham University and a Master's degree in Adolescent Math Teaching from Iona College.
My interest in math began when I read Sherlock Holmes and fell in love with the way he used logic and reason to solve mysteries. The methods of Holmes - deductive reasoning, analysis, inference, etc. - are the very same skills required to solve many of the most puzzling math mysteries.
In my sessions with students, I do not like giving answers or doing the work myself. I ask questions to guide the students through their own reasoning processes. My goal is to make the student comfortable and confident in their own analysis so that after each session they can do more problems without any help. I break down concepts so they're easier to understand and work out examples. I relate the problems to real life to make it more interesting and fun. I encourage my students to say what they are thinking, and never judge them or their ideas.
The following is a review from a client I worked with. This feedback is the reason I love tutoring students.
“When my granddaughter was struggling to get a D in her Geometry class, Bejoy came to the rescue and helped her to understand the concepts which she struggled with. In the month we've had Bejoy, she has increased her grade, once an F, to a B. Her homework average is now an A. Her test average is now a B. She feels much more confident in her abilities and can complete the work easier. Even her math teacher has noticed the improvement. Bejoy is highly recommended by me.” - Debbie
