After 26 years of being a full-time NJ public school teacher of science and computers, I retired to become a one-on-one tutor. I discovered I love tutoring, and adjust my teaching style based on what works best and feels most comfortable for each individual student. I have a bachelor's degree in Biology and did graduate work in Neurobiology and Education. I tutor Math from grade 4 through Algebra 1, and most Science courses.
My tutoring philosophy comes down to this:
· First, I strive to create a positive learning experience for my students.
· Second, improve my students' understanding of the subject matter.
· Third, well everything else falls into place after those two.
Grades improve
Attitude improves
Self-confidence improves
My personal mottos are:
Being wrong is wonderful, because now you know more than you did before. You can't learn something you already know.
In my first year of online tutoring, I had a very, very shy student in both middle school math and science. She said I brought him out of his shell and had much greater self-confidence that carried over from his math and science to his other subjects as well. At the end of the school year she sent me a custom T-shirt that said on the front, "Mr. L turns mice... " and on the back, "Into Lions!"
