I graduated from UCLA as a Regents Scholar, with a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics and a specialization in computing. I have been tutoring for over 10 years, and I tutor grades PK-College.
I believe in finding the way each student understands math. I love using analogies relating to students interests so they can recognize how math affects the world around them. I am very kind and enthusiastic, and strive to create an environment when the student feels comfortable making mistakes, as you have to make mistakes before you can succeed! I love teaching students how to find answers themselves, and ask the right questions to get to solutions.
I once was tutoring a group of three elementary students in programming in Python, and one of the students was unengaged. He was really struggling with the material, and would instead distract the other two students. I knew he was very excited about basketball, so I began to emphasize how you could take most coding and math problems, and apply them to basketball in some way. For example, instead of just sorting numbers, we decided we were sorting players by jersey number! After teaching him and the other students how to shift problems in this way, he became much more passionate about the material, and even coded his own basketball inspired projects in his free time.
I did gymnastics for over 10 years, and coached for around 3! I love being creative, and do ceramics and watercolor painting. I also love playing video games on my Nintendo Switch!
