I have a bachelor’s degree in middle school math and science instruction from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and I tutor students in grades 1-10. I used to own a tutoring company, and that experience taught me how important individualized instruction is.
I have struggled in math before so I know first-hand what that’s like. With my students, my first task is to take time to understand them. It’s very important to build trust early in an educational relationship, and taking the time to do this early pays dividends later on. Once my student has become more comfortable and knows I’m not there to judge their mistakes, I approach the content with them, and gauge their understanding with friendly questions. Then, we hit the ground running and we work!
I have tutored students from all backgrounds. Above all, I love helping my students and if I can do that in any way, I have succeeded.
My favorite student was one who didn’t want to work with me. She refused to believe that she was good enough. After several sessions of getting to know her, she opened up to me and told me she felt like she was an outcast in school and in life. She wanted to change but she didn’t know how.
She showed me that she was more than good enough, because after many sessions together she changed her grades from F’s and D’s to B’s and C’s. She did have it in her, and in one of our very last sessions she hugged me and told me I was the only one she could talk to. I still hold memories of her very closely.
