I am a certified physics teacher with 5 years' experience tutoring and teaching at the middle and high school levels. I have a master's degree in both Optics and Science Education from the University of Rochester and I tutor grades 6-College.
I really enjoy getting to know students and adapting my instruction to their individual needs. I am passionate about the topics I teach, and love to come up with creative ways of explaining concepts to students who may be struggling. It is very rewarding to me to guide a student towards success, especially with topics that they found challenging in the past.
One of my favorite success stories is when I helped a student learning the English language experience success in physics class. This is a student who was really struggling at the beginning of the school year, and was considering possibly dropping out of the course altogether. We met regularly to work on her ability to break down the wording and vocabulary within problems in order to understand what each question was asking. In addition, I provided her with additional supports such as graphic organizers and the ability to listen to her tests rather than just read them. By the end of the year, she was able to regularly achieve above the passing mark on exams as well as pass the end of the year assessment! Physics still was not her favorite subject, but she learned that she could overcome challenges through perseverance and dedication.
Outside of tutoring, I like to spend time long distance running, creating music (I play guitar and drums), and playing with my dog.
