I am a certified teacher and I worked in elementary level classrooms from 1995 through 2016. I have an bachelor's degree in mass communication arts from Lindenwood University and I tutor grades PK-8.
I really do not have one tutoring style, other than finding the method which works best for my student. Everyone learns in a different manner. My task, as the tutor, is to discover how the student learns best and what will motivate the student to take ownership in the concept we are working on. Within a session, I use many activities to engage the student (written, verbal, auditory, kinesthetic) and, whenever possible, to make "real life" connections. I am an active listener and pick up on cues to assist me in determining if a student is struggling with an assignment or ready to move forward.
I once worked with a preschooler who had all the "nuts and bolts" down of phonemic awareness. She could understand and identify individual sounds, blend sounds to make words, but she hadn't yet made the connection that words bring meaning and words put together in a logical manner compromise a sentence. One day, we were going through her language arts activities and she was sounding out words. She looked at me and said, "These letters make sounds, the sounds make words, and words are reading." She had made the "connection in her mind" and never "looked back" when it came to reading.
I like to garden in my back yard during the warmer months. In the winter, I, (no surprise), like to read books from various genres. I have also been a volunteer for eight years for a no-kill animal shelter. From that shelter, I have two cats and one dog who keep me busy and on my toes.
