I have been an academic tutor (and coach) for the past twenty years, tutoring a variety of subjects. I have a Bachelors degree in Chemistry from the State University of New York - Stony Brook and a Masters degree in Chemistry from California Institute of Technology. I tutor grades 6-College.
I'm a lifelong learner whose never been a 'natural' but always been the hardest worker around. Because I've had to work so persistently and creatively in order to really grasp a subject top to bottom, I've become adept at relating to and teaching students at all levels of understanding and backgrounds. Most importantly, I know that learning is a journey and the quality of your learning journey matters as much as the learning itself. When you work with me, you will find that I'm patient, empathetic, keep things light and, most importantly, make learning relatable.
I hold a special place in my heart for a high school student who was the son of a very successful heart surgeon. Both he and his father had always hoped he would follow in his father's footsteps, but he'd performed poorly in his 9th grade Biology class and found previous tutors unhelpful. After working with me, he (finally) understood Biology. Not only did he get an 'A,' but he called me back after struggling mightily in 10th grade Chemistry. Once again, after working together more than half the year, he ended up with an 'A' in class (after which he admitted he -- for the first time -- actually felt like he would become a doctor like his father one day!).
I love playing and watching basketball. I really enjoy cooking and prepare something yummy for my family almost every day. I also love travelling the world and even lived/worked in South Korea for two years!
