I have a B.S. in Linguistics with a Math Minor from The College of New Jersey and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Math Specialization from Wichita State University. I am a New Jersey Certified Middle and High School Math Teacher with 6 years of classroom teaching experience and 15 years of private tutoring experience. I particularly enjoy working with students who feel they are not naturally “good at math,” have difficulties understanding it, or have had poor teachers that caused gaps in their mathematical education.
I am a math enthusiast who understands that math can only be fun when truly understood. My tutoring style consists of getting to know my students' interests and learning styles, and then using those as tools in the lesson to help communicate the concept clearly and make the lesson engaging. I am extremely structured and love notes, and I start with the foundations of the concept (what it means, where it fits in a broader scale of math), and then build more difficult questions until the student is at the appropriate level. If students need to go back to a grade level or two to learn a previous concept that was skipped or forgotten, I will always take the time to do that because I believe that building a solid foundation is key. My primary goal is to make the tutoring session a safe place to ask any question and ultimately feel supported and confident about math.
One of my more recent success stories is about a young lady I had the pleasure of working with this past year. She failed Algebra 1 and Geometry and her parents came to me for help before she started Algebra 2. We spent three weeks twice a week before the school year working on fundamentals from 8th grade and Algebra 1. About four weeks into the school year she took a quiz and got an 84, and then another two weeks later she took a test and got an 86. She was thrilled, but more importantly, she said to me, "Wow, I can do math." She has been able to maintain a B this entire year in Algebra 2.
I enjoy reading, binge-watching TV, listening to music, hanging out with my cat, and spending quality time with my family.
