I am a former fourth-grade Math Teacher with 3 years of experience in classrooms and a decade of experience working in the education sector. I have a Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Education in Elementary Educational Studies. I also have experience in coaching Math interventions across grades second through seventh grade.
I aim to build confidence in your child to take risks by reviewing various strategies for problems. I hope to help build transferable skills that will allow my students to become the mathematicians they want to be. I use an explicit model where I model the strategy & think aloud, I offer guided practice to try the strategy and check for understanding, and, lastly, give my students time to tackle the strategy on their own through independent work.
While I was in the classroom, I used small group sessions with my students. One of my students, K, struggled with using our fraction strategies in class and did not feel confident in using them independently (he was frustrated and did not want to do the work.) Our small group sessions became one-on-one work where I helped him break down the confusion that he had and offered alternatives to solve it. His confidence improved and he continued taking risks in the class.
Outside of my teacher hat, I am a photographer, lover of music, video gamer, and I love to cook!
