I have been tutoring since 2012. I received my bachelor's degree in mathematics and applied computer science from Eastern Michigan University in 2015. I then received my master's degree in mathematics from Eastern Michigan University in 2019.
I've tutored all kinds of math subjects. As a longtime math lab tutor, I've tutored whichever subjects the students had questions on. Some of these include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus. I've also done dedicated ACT math tutoring and have been a supplemental instructor for an algebra-level math course.
As a math lab tutor, I've worked with college students. As an A.C.T. tutor, I've worked with high school students. And as a general math instructor, I've worked with children of all ages.
I believe that anyone can get something out of math. Many students are faced with adversity in math and end up disliking math as a result. My hope is that I can show them that math isn't some insurmountable obstacle and can instead be a fun challenge. I believe it's the tutor's responsibility to be able to explain any problem in multiple ways until the student understands. Anyone is capable of understanding math.
Countless students feel lost at first. However, after putting in the effort, it finally clicks with them. One student in particular comes to mind. He was struggling with understanding trigonometry. He explained that he felt completely lost and had no idea how to even begin. After some explanation and some hard work together, it finally clicked for him. It took explaining it in a way that made sense to him. He was so happy that it finally made sense to him after struggling to understand the material on his own. Seeing that joy makes the whole job worthwhile.
This story reaffirms the idea that students learn differently and may need multiple explanations until one makes sense to them. All you have to do is to keep trying and you'll get there!
