I have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in mathematics from University of Central Oklahoma. I have been a math tutor since 2018 and I have tutored students in grades 9-College.
I truly believe that everyone can learn math. I’ve heard so many students say that they “can’t do math”. I had thought the same of myself until I was taught in such a way that the information just clicked for me, resulting in me falling in love with math. Every student can learn math, but everyone processes information differently. I try to focus on figuring out each student’s learning style and helping them gain confidence in their abilities.
I have found that connecting the math concepts to real life applications can encourage students to want to learn. With my mechanical engineering background, I have been able to explain various applications of each math concept to students I have tutored. There have been many times where this has helped the student gain a better understanding as well as an interest in learning more.
One of the most memorable students I’ve ever tutored was one of the first students I ever tutored and he did not want to listen to anything I had to say. He would often come to me for help with his online college Calculus I homework.
The first time I met him he was very frustrated that every answer he entered was wrong. He would frantically enter random numbers out of frustration. I asked if I could help and I remember him saying, “I don’t see how you could do any better, but I guess”. I tried to explain the concepts he seemed to be having trouble with, but he did not want to hear anything I had to say. I eventually figured out that he was just embarrassed that he needed help.
I found a way to explain the concept to him so that he understood and he was able to finish his homework more easily. He began to regularly come in for my help. When he got an A on his next test, he was so grateful for my help that he bought me some gummy worms.
I enjoy reading, hiking, and live music.
