I am a certified teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience in classrooms and online. I have taught math, ELA, writing, science, social studies, and history. I have taught English as a second language to students of all ages. I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Weber State University in Utah and a Master of Education and a Doctor of Education in Education, both from the University of Phoenix in Phoenix, AZ. I have also taught adult education in Canada. I tutor grades 5 to 12.
I am a patient teacher and am passionate about the topics I teach. I like to learn about the student's interests and their learning style. Being a student-centered teacher I modify lessons when necessary to meet the student's needs. I pace my teaching style to accommodate my student, going slow and repeating where necessary, or adjusting the curriculum to meet the student's needs. Making sure the student knows the material so that they have a knowledgeable foundation to move forward academically is essential. To do this I take a few minutes at the end of the session to discuss with the student any questions they may have.
One of my favorite success stories is when one of my students who had a history of missing school and avoiding completing assignments became a part of my class. It had been hard on this student from the early grades in school. Academically and socially life was a challenge. I welcomed the student into the classroom, met with the parents, created a plan for the student, and met throughout the year. I worked one on one with the student both before and after school and by the end of the year the student was in class every day, completed all of her assignments, and wrote a wonderful storybook for the final assignment in writing. This student is now excelling in high school.
I really enjoy traveling. I have lived in 12 states and in Canada. Because of my traveling, I love photography, and history, learning about different cultures, reading, and writing. I also enjoy camping, hiking, golf, horseback riding, gardening, cooking, and fishing.
