I’m a certified teacher and have been tutoring grades 5-College for almost 20 years. I have taught in many states. I have a bachelor's degree in secondary math education from the University of Minnesota. I enjoy working with students who have higher support needs and have helped student with various learning disabilities.
As a former student that dealt with the hurdles of self-confidence and high anxiety, I remember the teachers that helped me overcome my insecurities to follow my dream of helping other students. I provide a comfortable and encouraging space for students to ask questions and participate, while also providing opportunities for them to excel. For this reason, my students feel my sincere care for them as I meet them where they are and help them grow in their confidence and math abilities.
One of my greatest success stories as a tutor involved a 7th grader who was needing to prepare for a school entrance exam. She had missed half of her previous school year due to being in the hospital from a traumatic experience. As we began her tutoring, I was aware that she needed to feel supported and reassured as she struggled with high levels of anxiety and low self-confidence and in her math capabilities. I tailored the lessons to provide a safe place for her to ask questions, as well as motivate her to work on her lessons both with me and in between lessons. We started with riddle sheets that would allow her to self check her work. As her confidence grew, we progressed to more complex problems while still using a step by step approach and a "can do" attitude. She not only qualified for school admission, but she was able to register for an advanced math class.
I enjoy playing both indoor and outdoor games with friends and family. I also enjoy spending time with my 3 dogs and 7 chickens.
