I love to challenge my students with various applications of the concepts we learn so that they gain a better understanding of those concepts and their importance. I have a master's degree in mathematics from Tarleton State University and I tutor grades 7-College.
I love to approach teaching with a story or an example to introduce topics in a manner that students from any background can comprehend. I find that introducing students to a concept through an application makes it easier to understand why and how we use it.
As more and more non-traditional students are returning back to college, I had the opportunity to work with a veteran who was having trouble understanding how to apply the concepts from college algebra to his homework. Although many other tutors had trouble reteaching him many of the prerequisite topics he needed to know for the course, I worked with him most of the week so that he could review the prerequisites he needed for that week’s lessons. He eventually became a regular student of mine for that semester, and his hard work payed off when he got a B in the course. Despite the trouble he had early on, his hard work proved that anyone can learn mathematics with enough time and patience.
I played tennis in high school and enjoy watching the games now and then. I play piano and enjoy learning to play modern songs like those by Adele. I also love the mystery novels by Agatha Christie; it’s always fun to theorize who the culprit might be.
