Hi there! As a mathematician, I love mathematics, and I also love helping other students love mathematics. Maths can be a beautiful subject, so I always try to imbue my passion into my students.
The only way to learn maths is to do maths. So, a typical session with me involves solving a lot of problems. I start small, illustrating general approaches, techniques, and concepts, then progressively create harder and harder problems to build confidence in the material. If, while a student is working through a problem, they have questions on an earlier topic or are confused about a previous method, I try to pivot to doing some problems on that material, almost like a little mini-game. When a student feels confident, I try to push a little beyond to encourage some curiosity.
One of my proudest moments as a tutor was when a university student, as a junior, asked me for help in Abstract Algebra. She was very anxious going into the class, but after several weeks of working together, she passed the course. As a maths major as well, she continues to text me about how useful the course was, and how she is noticing many of the concepts and topics I hinted at in her later courses.
Outside of tutoring and maths (large portions of my life), I love doing puzzles, playing video games, reading, and watching the news (I LOVE politics). Some of my favorite fandoms include Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Marvel, and I can nerd out over any of them!
