Shalyn

I am a certified teacher, and after nearly a decade in the classroom I am excited to work one on one with students to build strong relationships and have fun learning together. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Grand Canyon University and I tutor grades K-5.

My tutoring style:

I am a strong believer in laughing while learning and am proud to be a teacher that “does both” in that I am simultaneously goofy and firm. I really enjoy getting to know my students on a personal level so that we can connect new information to their past experiences. I love to use Google Classroom with my students so that we can work on projects that I’ve created specifically for them. I find that many of my students enjoy this process as they are able to play while learning through lessons that use interactive activities like drag and drop, matching, sorting, puzzles, creative thinking, etc.

Success story:

I love hearing from parents that their child went from disliking reading to finding a love of literature while working with me. Knowing that I can help instill a passion for reading in a young child that they will carry with them through the years makes me feel like I’m truly making the world a better place. I’ve had many students start a year below grade level and by the end of the year they have reached at or above level, but my favorite story has to do with a young first grader. It was the end of the school year and my students had just finished cleaning out their desks and gone home for the day. As I finished cleaning the classroom, I found a scrap of paper on the floor. On this paper was scribbled, “First Grade Accomplishments... 1. Finish reading a big chapter book. 2. Get Honor Roll. 3. Make Ms. Lowry proud.” For the next three years, this student made sure to walk by my classroom each morning just to give me a hug and say “good morning.” It’s moments like that when I know that I’m making a positive impact in my students’ lives.
