I am a certified teacher with 24 years of experience in classrooms teaching Math, Science, and ELA. In the last 8 years, I have taught Math and Science in grades from 3rd -5th. Last year, I taught Math to four different 5th-grade classes, with students that are in the Gifted Program, Regular Education, Special Needs, and ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). I have taught gender base classes (all boys) for 6 years. I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida and a Master's degree from the University of Grand Canyon. I have worked with students from kindergarten to 5th grade.
I am a passionate teacher about the skills that I teach. I am a believer
that "ALL" students can learn but this can only happen when you take time to understand what background knowledge the student brings. I adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of my students (visuals, repetition, moving at a slower pace, and providing many different ways to problem solve).
One of my favorite success stories just happened this year, when I had a 5th-grade student who "hated" math and believed she would never master it. She was scoring below the level on her State Test. We met twice a week up to her last State Test. We began to work together and build from the amount of strategies she already knew. This led to her applying the skills learned and tackling the difficult problems she encountered. She finally took her State Test which she scored a level 5 (which is the highest level possible) as well as her now "loving " math. Hearing this is rewarding enough!
I enjoy photography and swimming and I LOVE DOGS. My new hobby is Legos and slowly building on that.
