Empowering Students to Excel: Personalized Tutoring Backed by a Degree in Materials Science Engineering, Public and Private School Teaching Experience, and Expertise in Job Training for Technical Careers. I tutor from grade 6 into adult education with my specialty being high school and college students.
My tutoring philosophy centers around empowering students to take control of their own learning journey. I ignite and fuel their ambition and help students recognize their own potential and equip them with the tools to succeed both now and throughout their lives. I relate the learning to their interests and abilities so that they can leave my sessions not only with better grades but understanding the value of education.
Many students I work with experience challenges due to gaps in learning, especially after the COVID pandemic. This often leaves them feeling disconnected from school, with some believing that certain subjects, like math, are beyond their capabilities. However, I’ve found that students strong in social sciences often benefit greatly from the logical structure of mathematics. By helping them understand the "why" behind each concept, I enable them to connect math to their analytical skills, which schools may overlook.
For STEM-oriented students struggling in English Language Arts, I take a quantitative, methodical approach that builds their confidence and bridges gaps in understanding. By making seemingly subjective topics more structured and approachable, I help students feel more at ease. As an engineer, I love incorporating real-world examples to spark interest and deepen understanding, fostering a genuine curiosity and connection to the topics we cover.
For high-achieving students aiming to excel in their academic subjects, I provide the tools and guidance to help them reach their ambitious goals. Whether tackling advanced coursework, preparing for honors-level challenges, or mastering complex concepts, I tailor my approach to their individual needs. Over the past year, I have had numerous success stories where students deepened their understanding of key subjects, developed effective study habits, and honed critical thinking skills—ensuring their academic performance reflects their true potential.
In addition to K-12 students, I also enjoy working with adults who are returning to education or preparing for vocational exams. I draw from my professional background, including my participation in President Obama’s Task Force on Technology Jobs at the White House, where I presented on strategies for making solar jobs more accessible through tailored instructional techniques. I bring this same level of dedication to every student, no matter their age or educational goals.
I had the privilege of mentoring a student who faced the risk of getting involved in crime and not completing high school. As his math teacher, I took on the role of a supportive mentor, guiding him and instilling a sense of purpose and hope in his education. Through consistent encouragement and personalized attention, I witnessed his remarkable transformation from struggling with basic math skills to successfully passing algebra and ultimately graduating. This experience showed me the power of mentorship, personalized support, and fostering a belief in the potential of every student to overcome challenges and achieve academic success.
When I am not tutoring, you can find me in the garden experimenting with new sustainable and agroecological methods, going on a motorcycle ride, and playing my many instruments- such as dobro, guitar, tanpura, and harmonica.
