"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for life." This sentence encapsulates my teaching philosophy in that I want all my students to understand how to solve a problem on their own. I emphasize the HOW to get an answer rather than the answer itself because I know that knowing the HOW gets you to the WHAT the answer is. My style tends to focus on fundamental math skills as that is what I most often see as lacking in most students today and not knowing them means the higher level topics will be all the more difficult to learn.
I recently tutored one student in Geometry. He was a smart kid and understood the material already pretty well. He however struggled with formulas, theorems, and other such memorized knowledge. He struggled with things like areas and volumes and because he didn't know these formulas, he wasn't able to use them. After working with me, he not only learned these formulas but was able to go on and pass his Geometry final test!
